Maqbul Ahmed takes oath as Jamaat chief
Maqbul Ahmed who has been the acting Ameer of Jamaat e Islami since the arrest of Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami on June 29, 2010, has been made Ameer of the party on Monday.
Motiur Rahman Nizami convicted of war crimes during Liberation War in 1971 and was sentenced to death, which was carried out on May 11 of this year.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been made the secretary general of the party, previously he had served in the capacity of “acting” secretary general of the party, since the arrest of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed, on the same day as Nizami. Mujaheed was executed November 22 last year.
Both Nizami and Mujaheed were the first elected Jamaat Ameer and secretary general, who were elected via direct ballot by the party rokons or “top-level organizers” back in 2001. They were re-elected in 2009.
No election had taken place since their arrest until last month.
