Data obtained from the country’s most used train station Wi-Fi hotspot reveals that porn was among the most popular searches

Mark Zuckerberg of wants to connect India to the internet perhaps because he wants to win over millions of new Facebook users. However, it seems the veritable goldmine isn’t in social media — it’s in porn.

Google and internet provider RailTel offers free Wi-Fi at 23 train stations in the country. Data obtained from the location where most internet use occurs revealed that the service is mostly utilized to discover porn reports The Economic Times.

As per a RailTel official, “More than any other railway station in the country, the Patna railway station is the number one in the country for using internet search,” “mostly used to search for porn sites.”

Jaipur, Bengaluru, and New Delhi stations followed Patna in usage traffic. However, details on what users were exploring for at such locations wasn’t divulged.

Due to increasingly cheap smartphones, every day thousands of people in India can discover the magic of internet for the first time. But this phenomenon of using public Wi-Fi for “private entertainment” is not particular to India.

Last month Wi-Fi kiosks set up at New York train stations were shut down amid concerns that too many were lounging about the booths and — you don’t need to guess — watching porn in public.

This “phenomenon” maybe just the start, Google last month advertised Google Stations, a plan which will deliver free Wi-Fi to buses and trains around the world.

So, next time you’re traveling to India, be careful of whose phone you peep at — you may regret it.
